- Program Description
“When World War II ended in complete Nazi defeat, Germany lay in ruins. Its cities a wasteland, its railroads and canals and roads virtually useless, its people stunned and hopeless. Within a few years the country was again thriving, its high standard of living restored, its cities booming, its currency the strongest in Europe, its good will courted by East and West. The man who dominated this period of astonishing resurrection and who did the most to bring his country into the west European concert was Dr. Konrad Adenauer. The miracle of his achievement was compounded because it came in a fourteen year incumbency as Chancellor, from 1949 to 1963, the longest since Bismarck, and longer than the existence of Hitler’s Third Reich.”
