- Series Description
Buster, one of the most popular characters on ARTHUR will accompany his airline pilot father as he flies the fictional Latin rock group Los Viajeros on a concert tour of the United States, with forays into Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Buster will stay in touch with his friends back home via a small, hand-held digital video camera. These first-person video "postcards" will be in the form of live-action, P.O.V.-style footage of the places visited in the show. Narrated by Buster, they are woven seamlessly into each animated story. "It's important for children to experience cultures different from their own," says WGBH executive producer Carol Greenwald. "Putting Buster on the road and immersing him in real-life settings via the live-action 'postcards' is a perfect vehicle to teach children about the rich and complex cultural life that exists across America." Series release date: 2004
- Program Description
The Seattle concert is a benefit for a Seniors Home, a very worthy cause. But it gets Buster to thinking: what has HE been doing to help others? His search for an answer leads him to discover there are many ways one can help one's friends and neighbors.
During their visit to Seattle, Los Viajeros are performing to benefit a local senior home. Buster's new friend DeShe shows him how he helps others through his family's gospel ensemble. It gets Buster thinking: what has he been doing to help others?
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Children will gain some understanding of community life and culture in Seattle, as Buster meets DeShe and accompanies him to a gospel choir rehearsal (which his grandmother directs), a local soul food restaurant, a senior home benefit, and an island in Puget Sound where the boys learn a bit about island ecology from kids at a nature camp. Children will observe similarities and differences between their own experiences and those of the children and families featured in this episode. For children who are in the process of learning English, this episode models ways to give advice and to ask questions to learn more about another person's life. It also builds children's familiarity with vocabulary related to community service, music, and summer camp activities.
