When Harriet Vane is invited to her old Oxford College's annual "Gaudy Night," she discovers that the college has been plagued by an epidemic of poison-pen letters and obscene drawings. Unwilling to go to the police, the head of the college asks Harriet to investigate. When she begins her inquiries, Harriet receives threats and is attacked in the school library. Enlisting Lord Peter's assistance, they trace the mysterious events to the culprit in the act of composing a malicious letter.
