- Program Description
"Fear not, poetry," declares Elizabeth Alexander in her conversation with host Kim McLarin. For poet Alexander, language and culture are critical elements in the formation of poems that explore the human experience and they should be embraced, not disregarded.
Alexander is a professor of African American literature and culture at Yale University and a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for the 2007–2008 academic year. Her collection American Sublime was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2006.
Alexander reads from her latest collection, Miss Crandall's School for Young Ladies and Little Misses of Color, which was cowritten in alternating sonnets with Marilyn Nelson, the former poet laureate of the state of Connecticut. Alexander also reads poems from American Sublime, which was celebrated by the American Library Association as one of 25 notable books of 2005.
