Program Description

FRONTLINE/World, a new documentary series turns its lens on the global community. The series will cover countries and cultures rarely covered by the U.S. media. Co-produced by WGBH and KQED. Islands Under Siege - De Guzman-a Philippine native who is also a radio correspondent for PRI's The World-travels to the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines to explore what is fueling the separatist aspirations of Mindanao's minority Muslim population. De Guzman finds Muslim villages accused of harboring rebels systematically burned and emptied of their people and witnesses the daily battles between insurgents and the Philippine military that have killed 180 civilians in the last year. After a fourteen-hour trek through dense jungle, De Guzman arrives at one of the MILF's hideouts and interviews a local commander-codename "Congressman"-who breaks down in tears when describing his struggle. De Guzman also obtains a rare interview with Al Haj Murad, the MILF's chief military commander and a man wanted in connection with multiple terrorist bombings, including one last March at Davao's International Airport that killed twenty-one people. In the Line of Fire - reporter Patricia Naylor interviews numerous journalists-including foreign correspondents, Palestinian cameramen and even an Israeli photographer-who recount their own run-ins with Israeli soldiers, many of which were captured on film by other journalists. Viewers also witness footage of Dana's partner, Nael Shyouki, being shot by Israeli soldiers three times-once in the head-after filming a 1998 demonstration by Israeli settlers in Hebron. The Last Place - What happens when cable television intrudes upon an isolated Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas? By royal decree in 1999, Bhutan became the last country in the world to accept the inevitable-television. The tiny country, which has secluded itself from the rest of the world, knew it was taking a risk by opening itself up to images from the Western world. But were they prepared for soap operas and the World Wrestling Federation? In "The Last Place," FRONTLINE/World follows Rinzy Dorji, the local "cable guy," as he installs the fascinating new technology in homes throughout his country.
