Elliot Norton Reviews
Pleasure of His Company, The
Series Description

Boston theatre critic Elliot Norton interviews prominent actors, directors and producers on their craft. (Aired from October, 1958 to 1982. Winner of both Peabody and Tony Awards.) Series release date: 1958

Program Description

Elliot Norton interviews film star and producer Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. about his role of Biddeford Poole in the drawing room comedy, The Pleasure of His Company by Samuel Taylor and Cornelia Otis Skinner. The play will be brought to the Northshore Theater Company in Beverly, MA after its run at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, ME. In the play, Pool is an unlikable loafer who tries to take daughter, Jessica, away from her rancher fiancée, Roger Henderson, in San Francisco after being away for 15 years. Fairbanks says the character Binneford would not be that interesting if he was completely admirable. He does not think that he was malicious in taking his daughter away from her fiancée; he just wants her to experience the type of extravagant life that he has before settling down. He says that part of the conflict comes from Binneford’s insensitivity to Roger and the fact that Roger is not sophisticated enough to be on the same terms Binneford. They discuss in depth the character of Binneford and his relationship to his ex-wife. They debate whether or not he is arrogant and insensitive.

They talk about why Fairbanks has not acted in films in a long time. They also discuss his 1968 touring production of My Fair Lady and how his interpretation of Henry Higgins differed from that of Rex Harrison and Richard Rodgers.
