Series Description

Boston theatre critic Elliot Norton interviews prominent actors, directors and producers on their craft. (Aired from October, 1958 to 1982. Winner of both Peabody and Tony Awards.) Series release date: 1958

Program Description

Elliot Norton interviews playwright, screenwriter, and novelist N. Richard Nash about his new novel, Aphrodite’s Cave. He is most famous for his play and subsequent film, The Rainmaker. Aphrodite’s Cave is about a young man from Boston who decides to go to Vietnam to become a paramedic instead of going to medical school. Nash talks about the five-year process of writing the long novel, which began when he went to Cyprus to get away from war. The days later, the Greeks invaded the island and he was in the middle of a war. Nash discusses the belief in Cyprus that Aphrodite was not mythical, but a real person and the attitude of the people in Cyprus towards the Greeks. They compare Nash’s life to that of the novel’s protagonist and discuss the two times Nash went to Cyprus. He says that the success of the book lays in the fact that it has an erotic, but not pornographic, love story, in spite of the less appealing aspects of the books: the main character is a coward and there is a lot of violence. One of the aspects of the play that Nash says he is most proud of is that “the mythological side of it, the return to the Greek myth is a part of a return to the beauty of our past.” They also discuss the research that Nash did on medicine for the book as well as his early training and background in medicine.

Director: Richard Heller. Taped 12/30/1980.
