Program Description

The true story of Queen Victoria's infatuation with a rustic Scottish servant. Academy Award-winner Judi Dench (Shakespeare in Love, As Time Goes By) stars as Queen Victoria, several years into inconsolable grief for her late husband, Prince Albert. Billy Connolly is John Brown, a rough-hewn Scottish gillie who used to take the royal couple riding at their Highlands castle. Brown is summoned by royal retainers hoping he can rekindle Her Majesty's will to live. He ends up kindling a great deal more than that. Also starring is Antony Sher (The Moonstone) as the witty, flamboyant Prime Minister Disraeli, who keeps the empire together while the queen is sequestered with her kilted attendant. Historians are divided about what kind of attention she got, but scandal sheets of the day didn't hesitate to re-christen her "Mrs. Brown." (1997 )
