While Hazel convalesces from the loss of a baby by miscarriage James consoles himself with his young step cousin, Georgina -- leaving Richard to assume the responsibilities of comforting and caring for Hazel and of running the house. The ensuing frictions bring home to Richard the cruel fact that he lives at Eaton Place only at James' sufferance.
