Program Description

"What is Black Theater?" Basic Black asked three theater directors immersed in Boston's dramatic arts scene.

In this installment of Basic Black, host Kim McLarin explores the meaning of black theater and its impact on Boston's theater-going community in a roundtable discussion with Robbie McCauley, associate professor of performing arts at Emerson College in Boston, Jacqui Parker who is the artistic director of the Our Place Theater Project—a performing arts training program in Boston, and Lois Roach, lecturer and artist-in-residence in theater studies at Wellesley College, as they share their personal connections with the art form.

Also, we'll show scenes from a play written and directed by Parker called "Dark as a Thousand Midnights," about a rural family living in segregated Mississippi set against the backdrop of the brutal murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black boy from Chicago.
