Program Description

Roger Swain opens at the suburban garden raking fallen leaves. He suggests leaving some leaves in the flower beds as they will break down through the winter, eventually nourishing the beds.

Adrian Bloom is in Bonnieux, France, visiting a ten-year old garden with new owner, Judith Pillsbury. These sculptured gardens, created by Nicole de Vesian, have a sense of antiquity in the hills of Provence. They surround the 17th Century stone house. Highlights:

Jasmine Boxwoods clipped in many forms Fig tree Lavendar Rosemary Cypress Choisya mexican orange Viburnum tinis Iris pumila (small blue flowers) Teucrium fruticans Senecia cineraria Plumbago auriculata cape leadwort (purple) Centranthus (pink) Quince tree Bellotta Viburnum opulus tree Grapevine (Vitis sp.) in barrels as espalier Elaeagnus Pear/apple trees

Roger Swain is back at the suburban garden digging up mandevilla 'Alice du Pont.' He places it in a pot and will store it in a cool greenhouse for the winter months, returning it to the outdoors in the spring.

He harvests beets 'Long Season' for Chef Marian's next recipe.

Chef Marian prepares Pickled Beets:

1 1/2 lbs. cooked beets (sliced) 1 chopped red onion 1 c. water 1 c. rice vinegar 1/2 c. sugar 1 1/2 tb. chopped ginger

Heat water, vinegar, sugar and ginger until the sugar dissolves. Pour over beets and onions. Marinate in refrigerator between 4 - 6 hours. Serve.
