- Program Description
“Of the many transformations that came out of World War II the most spectacular and far reaching were the creation of independent India and Pakistan. The problems that accompanied liberation were staggering -- civil war, appalling carnage, the migration of terror stricken populations, the economic and social tasks of feeding, housing, healing, educating hundreds of millions who had to be moved out of the age of the oxcarts and caste into the era of technology. The mentor for India, inheriting the mantle of leadership from Gandhi, was Nehru, whose fifteen year incumbency brought his teeming country into the 20th century. Pakistan with the leadership of Jinnah and Ayub was not as fortunate.”
