- Program Description
“Dr. Konrad Adenauer’s long incumbency as Chancellor of West Germany brought his country back into the family of the western nations. After initially accepting his paternalistic leadership, the people became restive; Adenauer’s very success encouraged this people to demand more freedom of action. He retired reluctantly in 1963 and was briefly succeeded by Ludwig Erhard, the economic genius who was mainly responsible for the miracle of German recovery. The growth of the Social Democrats during the 60’s culminated in the election of Willy Brandt as Chancellor in 1970, a development which opened possibilities of rapprochement with the eastern Communist bloc without jeopardizing the commitment to the west.”
