- Program Description
According to the 2000 census, people of color are 50.5 of the Boston population. For the first time in the city's history, people of color are in position to not only influence, but also control the city's future. A primary example of the impact those numbers can have be seen in the election of Felix Arroyo, Boston's first and only at-large Hispanic city councilor. In the 2003 election, New Majority, a coalition of activists mobilizing communities of color, organized a bullet-voting (voting for one one) campaign, which enabled Arroyo to defeat a better-funded and prominent opponent. The show will explore the new Majority's additional plans to gain seats of power and force responsiveness on issues of concern to people of color. In addition, the show will look at some of the challenges communities of color may face to achieve some of its goals, such as the dilution of voter strength through redistricting and attaining citizenship for many newcomers to Boston.
