Emily Watson, Cheryl Campbell, James Frain and Bernard Hill star in this adaptation of George Eliot's novel, published in 1860, which sympathetically portrays the vain efforts of Maggie Tulliver to adapt to her provincial world. Her brother Tom, who forbids her to associate with the one person who appreciates her intelligence and imagination, renounces her altogether when she's caught in a compromising situation. Brother and sister are reconciled as they struggle to survive a climactic flood.
