WGBH Forum Network; Why the Forward Strategy of Freedom Had to Fail
10/22/2006
Why the Forward Strategy of Freedom Had to Fail Yaron Brook, president, executive director, Ayn Rand Institute After Sept. 11th, the Bush administration declared that we must bring freedom to the Middle Eastern nations that threaten us; thus, the Forward Strategy of Freedom. By establishing democracies in key Muslim countries, starting with Afghanistan and Iraq, we would spur a revolution in the rest of the Muslim world: a revolution that would bring free, pro-Western, anti-terrorist governments to power. But the strategy has failed. The Muslim world has grown more militant, radical leaders are being elected to power, and Islamic totalitarian groups like Hamas and Hezbollah are on the rise. Dr. Yaron Brook examines the inherent flaws of the Forward Strategy of Freedom and explores what should replace it. Dr. Yaron Brook is a prominent advocate for Objectivism, the philosophy originated by novelist Ayn Rand. As president of the Ayn Rand Institute, an educational organization based in California, he appears frequently on national television and radio to discuss current events and issues from the Objectivist viewpoint. He is a regular guest on CNBC and has made frequent appearances on Fox News, including on The O'Reilly Factor. As an expert on foreign policy and the Middle East, he is interviewed for his answers to a range of questions related to the Arab-Israeli conflict, the war in Iraq, the Iranian threat and Totalitarian Islam and terrorism.
