Their creator, Walt Disney, was arguably the most influential figure in American popular culture of the 20th century. Despite the almost universal recognition his works received, Disney himself remained a mystery to the public during his life time. Finally, forty years after his death, Disney is the subject of a new and comprehensive biography, Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination, by award-winning author Neal Gabler. Gabler discusses the seven years of research that went into this massive project and reflects on the challenges that shaped Disney's inner life and, by extension, America's popular consciousness. Neal Gabler is an author, television commentator and cultural critic. His three previous books, including the award-winning An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood, have explored the relationship between popular culture, especially the movies, and the American Dream. A former film critic for the PBS movie review program, Sneak Previews, Gabler has most recently appeared as a regular panelist on Fox News Watch. He has received Freedom Forum and Guggenheim Fellowships and is currently a senior fellow at the Norman Lear Center for the Study of Entertainment and Society.
