Program Description

This is Ingmar Bergman's story of his parents and their complex love story, which takes place in Sweden. Part One: Poverty-stricken young Henrik meets a vivacious upper-class girl, Anna. They fall in love despite the opposition of Henrik's mother, Alma, and Anna's mother, Karin, the real ruler of the family. Part Two: Anna and Henrik travel to Forsboda, where they will live after their marriage. Despite their love, conflict arises when Henrik tells Anna he prefers a modest wedding to the elaborate one she has planned. Henrik begins his ministry at Forsboda, Anna gives birth to a baby boy. A stranger, who will have a great affect on the Bergman's lives, appears at their door. Part Three: In Stockholm, Anna and Henrik meet with the Queen of Sweden, who tells them she hopes he will become the chaplain of the new hospital. But Henrik is reluctant to abandon his congregation in the north. Petrus' strange behavior causes Anna to demand that he leave the house. Anna returns to her mother's home while Henrik stays on in Forsboda. NOTE: THIS FILM, WHICH IS IN SWEDISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES, WAS PREVIOUSLY IN THEATRICAL DISTRIBUTION.
