- Program Description
In the program Mrs. Child describes the preparations for, and the dinner given by President and Mrs. Johnson in honor of Prime Minister Eisaku Sato of Japan during their visit to the United States last November. This is the first time permission has been granted by the White House to film what actually goes on at such an event. Through Mrs. Child's eyes viewers will witness the "out front" formalities underlining the importance of Prime Minister Sato's visit. Backstairs, Mrs. Child translates the preparations for the official dinner for him into terms relevant to the average housewife. She examines with the butler the china and cutlery to be used, discusses with the chef the problems of feeding and serving 190 guests, sees the food being cooked and arranged, and finally, attends the banquet itself. In addition, Mrs. Child discusses with White House staff members their roles in the event. She talks to Walt Rostow, special assistant to President Johnson; Ambassador James Symington, chief of protocol; and Mrs. Elizabeth Carpenter, press secretary to Mrs. Johnson. The Hon. U. Alexis Johnson, U.S. Ambassador to Japan, discusses the preparations for Prime Minister Sato's visit prior to his arrival in the United States. Throughout the program, Julia Child highlights the triple function of the White House -- as a historic site, as the executive office of the president, and as official residence.
