Series Description

Gardening program hosted by Jim Wilson and joined by Bob Smaus, Roger Swain, Lucinda Mays and Peter Seabrook as international travel correspondent. Series chef is Marion Morash. Special correspondent is Holly Shimizu. The Boston-based Victory Garden (w/ Roger Swain) is located at a private residence; Victory Garden South is at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia; Victory Garden West is at Roger's Garden Center in Corona del Mar, California. Original program: Crockett's Victory Garden - premiered April 6, 1976. Hosted by Jim Crockett. Second host Bob Thomson (for 12 years till 1991). Series release date: 1976

Program Description

Roger displays the wonderful, white blooms of the wisteria. The nearby linden tree is beginning to overshadow the vine. He pots up annuals that will last until the frost (trailing snapdragons, surfina petunias and verbena). He stakes the delphiniums to protect them from harsh winds.

Holly Shimizu is at Rip Van Winkle Gardens in Louisiana with operations manager, Charles Toups. They tour the gardens that once were destroyed by a local mining disaster. Highlights: bamboo grove, wishing well, koi pond, bald cypress, oaks, magnolias, rhododendrons, banana plant, jasmine, narcissus, palms, dovecote, roses and veg. garden.

Roger Swain discusses the benefits of Bacillus Thuringiensis (BT). He plants peppers ‘La Parie” deeply in a bed covered in black plastic for warmth. He plants tomatoes ‘Ultra Boy' at the trellis.

Chef Marian prepares a radish salad (see below).

Roger closes in a bed of poppies combined with purple alliums.
