- Dynasty: The Nehru Gandhi Story
- Program Description
On August 14, 1947, India won independence after 200 years of British rule -- due to the tireless work and sacrifice of three Hindu nationalists. Mahatma Gandhi was the spiritual leader; Jawaharlal Nehru, son of Motilal Nehru, was to be the elected political "monarch." The next two generations of Nehrus, Indira and her two sons, continued the reign through 1991, when son Rajiv was assassinated by terrorists. This special documents the ties of blood, sacrifice and power, and chronicles India's four generations of Nehru family leaders, hinting at a fifth. The program airs during the 50th anniversary year of India's independence.
