Program Description

“Two World Wars substantially loosened the power of the colonial nations, victors and losers alike, to control their imperial dominions. There had been increasing revulsion against western domination which after World War II turned into open revolt on all the submerged continents, and primarily in Africa.

The process of liberation was extremely complicated, for Africa was a vast continent which included some well defined nationalities, but also a myriad of tribal groups and a Babel of languages and dialects and customs. Northern African states were really part of the European Mediterranean world, and their problems were vastly different from the great black areas of central, east and west Africa. Redemption and emancipation came hard, with much bloodshed and terror, with initial tyranny, corruption and inefficiency. Age old evils of poverty, disease and illiteracy could not be quickly eliminated.”
