Jemma Redgrave as Dr. Eleanor Bramwell pursues public health and private amours in an all-new series of adventures in turn-of-the-century London. Episode 1: On a carnival outing Eleanor discovers Rose, a tragically deformed woman billed as "the Biggest Brain on Earth." Eleanor offers to make her normal with a simple operation, but then the surgery goes disastrously awry. Episode 2: A young woman rushed to the Thrift infirmary after an accident is discovered to be a man in drag who is romantically involved with a respected surgical equipment supplier. The tragic unfolding of their relationship opens Eleanor's eyes to a new aspect of human friendship and devotion. Episode 3: Masquerading as cousins, Eleanor and her colleague Finn O'Neil rendezvous at a seaside hotel. When Eleanor's father discovers the love affair, he declares his daughter a ruined woman and banishes her from the family home. Episode 4: Passions rise during a heat wave as Eleanor's affair with Finn O'Neil heats up, injured brewery workers turn up, and brewery owner Alice Costigan stirs up romantic yearnings in Eleanor's father, Robert. Episode 5: Romance is in the air as Robert Bramwell visits the country estate of glamorous widow and brewery magnate Alice Costigan. But a rival shows up when Alice turns to another doctor to treat her sick nephew. Episode 6: Joe Marsham decides to leave the Thrift infirmary for a better paying job in Scotland. But then he learns his wife has breast cancer. Desperate to save her, he puts his trust in the surgical skills of Eleanor and her father.
