A rocket is launched from the Soviet Union carrying a new kind of satellite. Once in orbit it maneuvers within range of an important American spy satellite, which is keeping watch over Soviet missile silos. The launch of Sputnik in 1957 signaled a new arena of competition between the superpowers.
