- Program Description
This episode is all about creating works of embroidery in three dimensions. Erica discusses two main ways to do such work—lightly padded and appliquéd forms and fully free-form pieces—and shows an example that she made of each, an embroidered owl with an appliquéd, three dimensional beak and fully free-form strawberries created out of fabric and batting.
Erica also shows several antique examples of three-dimensional needlework in this episode, including an eighteenth century English stumpwork piece and a Victorian shadowbox containing a raised wool embroidery of wildflowers.
Erica demonstrates many stitches in this episode, including coral stitch, brushed wool stitch, and trellis stitch, as well as the technique for stumpwork and a technique for creating low relief wildflowers out of pipecleaners.
