- Program Description
Jane Austen's classic story of romance denied begins in England in 1815. Seven years before, Anne Elliott (Amanda Root) fell in love with Frederick Wentworth (Ciaran Hinds), a young naval officer. Anne's father opposed the match, and she, reluctantly, was persuaded to break off the engagement, much to the horror of Wentworth, who walked out of her life. Now rich and successful, Wentworth unexpectedly returns to the neighborhood, making no secret of his intention to find a wife. Anne and Wentworth meet frequently in company, and though polite towards her, he is aloof. The passion of lovers, it seems, has cooled into the politeness of strangers.
