Series premiered May 5, 1979 Produced by WGBH Radio, Masterpiece Radio Theatre is a 52 week series of classic drama featuring dramatizations of American literary classics and selections from the BBC’s outstanding repertoire of radio drama. Programs included Anna Karenina, House of Mirth, Moby Dick, Jane Eyre, Far From the Madding Crowd, Sons and Lovers, and Les Miserables. Hosted by Julie Harris and produced by Elinor Stout.

- Program Description
Aired Sundays December 9, 1979-March 23, 1980 “Great grief is a divine and terrible radiance which transfigures the wretched.” Victor Hugo’s masterful story of the fight between good and evil and one man’s attempt to overcome his past. The 16 part BBC adaptation stars Trevor Martin as Jean Valjean, and Robert Hardy as the voice of Victor Hugo.
