Note to You, A; Fourth Of What, The

By the time Beethoven had got to his fourth, he knew how to make a symphony. But his Symphony #4 is not often heard these days. Why? Perhaps it was a point of reflection for him, a laboratory for furture ideas. Come to think of it, the same was true for other composers-Mozart, Mahler and Shostakovich come to mind. Whether it was a symphony, sonata or concerto, their fourth was the point at which they re-examined their style. Virginia examimes these transitional “fourths” on ANTY.
