On Arts Closeup in April Composer Evan Ziporyn: Art Close Up profiles the composer and clarinetist Evan Ziporyn, whose music, whether for solo clarinet, percussion ensemble, or full orchestra, is deeply influenced by his interest in Balinese gamelan. The word gamelan means "to hammer," and also refers to the large percussion orchestras of Java and Bali in which the primary instruments are gongs, metallophones, and cymbals. Ziporyn offers a comparison of Western and Eastern musical traditions through an intimate solo performance on clarinet and a rehearsal with his gamelan orchestra, Gamelan Galak Tika. For more information on gamelan music from Art Close Up's interview with Evan Ziporyn, visit the April 2004 feature. For more information on Gamelan Galak Tika, visit www.galaktika.org. Ziporyn's orchestral composition "War Chant" is also being performed by Boston Modern Orchestra Project on May 21, 2004 (call 617-363-0396 or visit www.bmop.org), and his original music is performed in the American Repertory Theatre's "Oedipus Rex" May 15 - June 12, 2004 (call 617-547-8300 or visit www.amrep.org). This story is produced and directed by Marty Ostrow. McQueen's exhibit at Wellesley's Davis Museum includes “Drumroll,” a film installation created when McQueen placed three cameras inside a full sized oil drum and rolled it down the streets of Manhattan. The resulting wall-size projections create an immersive gallery experience that both unsettles and delights. For more information on the exhibit, call 781-283-2051 or visit www.wellesley.edu/DavisMuseum. This story is produced and directed by Benjamin Mayer. More Specific Exhibition Info: Steve McQueen Davis Museum and Cultural Center Wellesley College 106 Central Street, Wellesley March 18 - June 29, 2004 _________ Artists for Humanity: Art Close Up tells the story of Artists for Humanity, an organization which creates a safe haven for young people to engage in meaningful artistic creation. Art Close Up’s cameras capture AFH members in process as they create a large-scale contemporary rendition of a Paul Gaugin mural that will be shown alongside the Gaugin exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts before it is permanently installed at Logan Airport. Through the MFA mural project and another exhibit at Newbury Street's Nielsen Gallery, Art Close Up learns how the organization has become a thriving non-profit where youth create, market, and ultimately see the financial rewards from their own artwork. For more information on Artists for Humanity call 617-737-2455 or visit www.afhboston.com. This story is produced and directed by Paul Stern. Artists for Humanity Mural Logan Airport, Terminal C Boston Beginning June 21, 2004 _________ Paul Vincent Davis: Art Close Up presents an impressionistic view of the work and artistic philosophy of puppeteer Paul Vincent Davis through a performance at the Puppet Showplace Theatre in Brookline. In a split-screen presentation of the staged performance presented next to the behind-the-scenes maneuverings of Davis, Art Close Up illustrates how artifice becomes reality as the characters come to life. As Davis puts it, "Puppetry is an unrealistic medium, but it teaches you to look at realism in a different way… to look around realism and see what you are missing." For more information on the Puppet Showplace Theatre visit www.puppetshowplace.org or call 617-731-6400. This story is produced and directed by Michael E. Boylan. More Specific Performance Info: Paul Vincent Davis performs Rumplestiltskin Puppet Showplace Theatre 32 Station Street, Brookline May 29 - 30, 2004 June 30 - July 1, 2004
